Ceramics I Department of
the Creative Arts 2006-2007 Instructor: Mr. Course
Description
The focus of Ceramics I is to familiarize the students with the clay medium. Strong emphasis is placed on the basic hand building techniques. Along with said techniques, several methods of decoration will be explored. The students will learn to follow a creative process to complete the assigned project. The Elements of Art, The Principals of Design, as well as Gestalt Theory will be emphasized and explored. Throughout the course there will be lectures, demonstrations, brainstorming sessions, along with in and out of class research. There will also be group discussions and critiques following assignments and projects. Please note that with all of this, most of the class time is dedicated primarily to the production of finished pieces, making it imperative that class time is used productively. Requirements: The students will:
Basis for grading: 1. Class participation: 120 pts. 2. Projects: 300 pts. 3. Sketchbook: 50 pts. 4. Paper: 50 pts. Total: 520 pts. Materials to be purchased: Sketchbook Final goals and objectives: The students will: 1. understand the properties of clay and be able to work with it. 2. understand the technical vocabulary dealing with ceramics. 3. understand the techniques and processes to aid in three-dimensional visualization and construction. 4. know how to work with clay through the pinch, coil, and slab building techniques. 5. have established a personal expression of the self through the clay medium. 6. become proficient in the methods of glazing. 7. gain knowledge of the art world through personal exploration/sketchbooks. 8. establish a creative process to build ideas. (i.e. mind mapping/brainstorming) 9. gain an appreciation for the art of clay. *please note that

Technical knowledge of the clay material, fine craftsmanship, consistency in design, creativity, and the ceramic art world will be the main areas of study throughout the course. Technical skills on the pottery wheel will be developed with the goal of forming several cylindrical, vase, and bowl forms this term.
