After a 21-year run in London and an 18-year run on Broadway, the smash hit CATS is making its Northwest Pennsylvania high school stage debut at Mercyhurst Prep.
The story is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S Eliot, and the music is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This all-dance show is set on a gigantic rubbish dump, which, after dark, comes alive with cats of all types, shapes and sizes.
The story is about a clan of cats known as the Jellicles, who gather at the Jellicle Ball to see which special cat will rise to the Heaviside Layer and return with a new life. The song, “Memory,” became famous from this musical, which is completely told through music and dance with hardly any dialogue. A special dance floor was purchased for this production at MPS with the benefit that it will be used in future drama and dance productions.
According to our Performing Arts chairperson and co-director, Arthur Martone, CATS is very demanding, both in the areas of dance and vocals. We have a strong number of students here at MPS who have strengths in both these areas so we knew that we would have the talent within these walls to do this show and to do it well.
Schools tend to steer away from this show due to the technically demanding choreography and the challenge to find a choreographer who is experienced and creative enough to take the dance to the level that is expected for this show. We have that person in Maryanne Mager-Dombrowski (MPS dance teacher, choreographer and co-director). Vocally, no one but Michael Miele (music teacher and musical director) can understand the complexities of the melodies and rhythms and lead high school students through the learning and vocal execution processes.”
You won’t want to miss this likely sell-out production, so mark your calendars for November 20, 21 and 22 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, November 23 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $7 adults – $6 seniors – $5 students and can be purchased at the door. No pre-sale tickets available.
