Model United Nations

Model United Nations is a club that participates in a simulated U.N. General Assembly. The basic purpose is an in-depth study of another nation, including the analysis and appreciation of its perspective on global issues and negotiation. Members will also develop their extemporaneous speech skills as they try to persuade delegates from other countries to adopt their resolutions regarding a wide variety of international political, social, and economic issues.

This year, the MPS Model United Nations will be representing both Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina at GUMUN.

Mercyhurst Preparatory School, along with 40 schools from Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio, participated in the 58th Annual Gannon Model United Nations conference on November 12 and 13, 2010. Last year, the Mercyhurst Prep delegation was awarded third place “Outstanding Delegation” for their representation of Bolivia and Peru.

Additionally, among the more than 650 students competing, Jenna Bekeny and Andrew Pregler were each awarded “Best Delegate” for their work in the committees on Combating Childhood Malnutrition and Policing the International Drug Trade, respectively. This was the second year in a row that Andrew Pregler was honored.

Seniors Danielle Comer and Patrick Habimana each earned 4-year, $1,000 scholarships to Gannon University for their participation in this year’s events.

The Model United Nations group at Mercyhurst Prep included 28 students working on topics International Disaster Relief, Combating Childhood Malnutrition, Controlling the Spread of Nuclear Weapons, Promoting Adherence to International Law and Human Rights Standards, Policing the International Drug Trade, and the Economic and Social Council’s Committee on Promoting and Improving Global Health Standards.
