Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is SAP?
SAP is a school-based team process designed to help students experiencing barriers to learning and success.
Is SAP counseling or therapy?
No. SAP does not provide counseling, diagnosis, or treatment. The SAP team helps connect students and families with appropriate resources and support services, which may include a referral for therapy services.
Is SAP confidential?
Yes. Referrals and discussions are handled confidentially and shared only with individuals involved in supporting the student.
Is there a cost?
No. SAP services are voluntary and free of charge.
Can students refer themselves?
Yes. Students may submit referrals for themselves or for a friend they are concerned about.
Should I use SAP if someone is in crisis?
No.
What happens after a referral is submitted?
After a referral is received, the SAP Team reviews the concern and contacts the parent/guardian to discuss the process and obtain consent for participation. The team then gathers relevant information, including input from school personnel and, when appropriate, the student. Using this information, the team collaborates to identify appropriate interventions and supports and monitors their effectiveness over time.
IMPORTANT: SAP IS NOT A CRISIS SERVICE
SAP referrals are not monitored continuously and may not be reviewed immediately.
Do NOT submit a SAP referral if a student is in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency.
If a student is:
- Talking about suicide
- Threatening self-harm
- Threatening to harm others
- Experiencing a mental health crisis
- In immediate danger
